Aetna Requirement for Criminal Background Checks Rescinded

May 29, 2025

We have received word from DMAS this morning that Aetna has rescinded (for Virginia) their requirement to complete and provide to Aetna the results of a criminal background check before hire and every three years thereafter.  A notice will come out from Aetna in the near future.

There were so many issues and pitfalls with their expectation and no possible way that providers could comply without considerable time and cost, but the larger and more significant point is that there seems to be no state control on what can or can not be added on to requirements, some screening as to compliance with Virginia Code or expectations, etc.

Thanks to DMAS leadership in listening to our concerns and following up to resolve the issue – we need to establish a better system going forward!
